I first became aware of Domains By Proxy® when I was registering a domain. The content of the domain I was most recently registering was somewhat sensitive (exposing the truth about entities who wish it to remain concealed), and might invite unwanted attention or inappropriate personal contact. Not being willing to lie about my phone or home address, I never considered filing with false information (as some spammers attempt to do), but realize there are legitimate reasons why I would need to be contacted. To correct errors in the web site, for example. To bring new information to my attention so I could add it to the site. To notify me about legal issues relating to the site.

But the real downside risk to my family, who were rightly worried about stalkers, harassers, or unstable personalities, meant I owed them at least one layer of protection when I registered this site. The alternatives were a private mail forwarding facility, a USPS P.O. Box, perhaps in a far-away city, and a voicemail phone system to make sure my home and/or cell phone were safe from misuse.

All of these alternatives cost more and took far more time to set up than the few minutes it took to arrange data privacy with Domains By Proxy. It could have cost 10-20 times as much! The choice was easy. Their reputation for privacy and service meets my needs. I can trust them to pass on the critical messages to me if the need arises. But I know that if I was ever to abuse their trust in me, by violating their terms of service, and using the service to hide behind if I harassed others, they would not stand for it.

I would also recommend the service for vanity or personal domains, where the only visitors should be family members or personal friends. Same for people who work at home, who don’t have a business address separate from their living address.

Why set your domain registration up as a homing beacon for spammers, trolls, or harassers? Domains By Proxy will pass on the critical communications you might miss if you used a throwaway email address to register your domain, and it was spammed into the next county after being harvested. But they make sure that you can sleep safe at night, knowing your family’s home address isn’t being passed around in the criminal community. -- Bill C.

Just a note to follow up on our recent phone call, where I had described some reasons that the DomainsByProxy service was being used by us on a large scale:

-- our number one reason is simply privacy. If we run a website called "WeLoveWidgets.com", we may not want anyone to know that we also run the site called "WidgetsSuck.com" (not that we run either of those, but you get the idea). It’s too easy at the large registrars to do ownership searches to find out every domain an individual possesses.

-- We’re less of a target to the large search engines, who often discriminate in their listings against "professional" webmasters. With your service, Google can’t tell if we own all top 5 websites that sell widgets. They can only rank our site based on its merit, and competing webmasters can’t report us for dominating a particular category. It removes the politics and lets us get back to basics.

-- DomainsByProxy reduces the amount of spam we receive! Important messages still find us, but random spam seems to pass us by. That alone is worth the price.

-- our last reason is personal safety. One of us had a problem a few years ago with an online stalker who found our phone number via a Whois search, and who kept harassing us. Now our information is hidden, without the extra expense of additional phone lines, email addresses, etc. So, overall, your service just makes us feel safe -- Nancy R.

Domains by Proxy provides an invaluable service to the business community. By protecting our identity on the WHOIS listing service, our company receives far less spam than if our domain names were purchased without this feature. -- Sheldon, VP of Information Systems.
